What is Testosterone Pellet Therapy?
This is a well-documented method of delivering bioidentical hormones that utilizes small pellets about the size of a grain of rice that are painlessly inserted under the skin. We’ve found the easiest and best place to insert them is under the skin of the lateral buttocks. The hormones in the pellets are bioidentical (exact molecular match of human hormone) and consist estradiol, estrogens, and testosterone. Testosterone helps with a number of issues including libido, mood stabilization, brain function, and bone density.
Pellets are synthesized from soybeans or yams. They are either pure estradiol or pure testosterone. Other than a small amount of stearic acid as is common in pharmaceuticals, there are no other ingredients in them. They dissolve completely with no residual under the skin over a 3-6 month period. Even though they are made from soybeans, it’s very unlikely that soy sensitive individuals would have a problem tolerating them.

How are Testosterone pellets inserted?
The pellets are inserted into subcutaneous fat (fat beneath the skin) of the buttock just below the waistline. To accomplish this, the patient must be lying on their side, the skin is anesthetized with an injection of a small amount anesthetic. After the area is anesthetized a small 5 mm incision is made by a sterile blade. A stainless steel or disposable trocar, is then inserted through this incision. Once in place in the subcutaneous fat the testosterone pellets can be placed inside the barrel of the trocar followed by a plunger that allows them to be inserted into the subcutaneous fat. Once this is completed the trocar is removed and the wound is covered by a series of bandages; there is no stitching involved in closing the wound to minimize scar. The whole procedure lasts 10 to 15 minutes.

Are there any side effects and/or complications?

The great majority of physician training is on horse estrogens and testosterone or synthetic hormones (e.g PremPro).
